Math and Careers

One of the benefits of studying mathematics is the variety of career paths it provides. A 2009 study showed that the top three best jobs in terms of income and other factors were careers suited for math majors. Another recent survey shows that the top 15 highest-earning college degrees have a common element: mathematics.

This project will require  you to research possible careers and investigate the role of mathematics in these careers. You will present your research to the class in a powerpoint presentation on Thursday. The following information should be included:

        I. General Job Description (Slides 1 and 2)
        II. Education (Slide 3)
        III. Expected Salary (slide 4)
        IV. Employment Outlook (Slide 5)
        V. Personality Traits Best Suited for the Job (Slide 6)

Choose a career which may be of interest to you. Research the career and write a description explaining the requirements and demands of your chosen job.

As you compile information there are items which must be included within your job description:
        * Slide 1: What do people in this career do?
        * Slide 2: How is math used in this job?

Below are some possible sites to search on the Web.

V. Personality Traits Best Suited for the Job (Slide 6)

There has been a tremendous amount of research done recently on personalities and careers. A person spends 8 to 10 hours 5 to 7 days per week working. It might as well be at a job one enjoys. What personality traits are best suited for the career you are researching? Do you believe that you have those traits?
